Schools in Indonesia are either government or private. Indonesians tend to
favor state schools, which usually offer a higher quality of education (but not
always). Parents will often put their children in private elementary schools
and then look for a good state school for secondary education. Basic educational
costs are not that high. It is uniforms, books and the like that add up.
Moreover, schools without exception, request additional payment from parents.
It is these additional payments thatwe cover (and of course, all the basics as
well).
For budgetary and planning purposes we are allocating an average $300 a year
for each child. The breakdown of this budget and how it will be spent is shown
below.
Actual costs are recorded and will eventually be shown on the web site against
each child. After our annual audit the budget for each child will be adjusted
based on actual expenditure during the past year.
Education's Budget Estimation
Our policy is to continue to put the children through school at the institution
they attended before the bomb blast, or in the case where the child is going
into junior or senior high or even university, at a standard Indonesian school.
Each school has different fees. We provide for basic education fees, uniforms,
shoes, school bags, books, stationary supplies, extracurricular activities and
tutorials.
As 75% of the children are under 12 years of age (and 37% are under 5), there
are many years of education to be funded.
As most of the children go to school in urban areas, the costs are somewhat
higher than for schools in rural areas (and the facilities offered are greater).
Please see the accompanying chart for specific costs and how much each child
will still need to finish their education through university.
