The first step was to get letters
of permission from the Department of Education and the
local regent’s office (Bupati Badung). This in
itself took a few days to complete. With letters in
hand, Nyoman Suma Artha and staff approached the four
(three state, l private) high schools in the greater
Kuta area:
SMA 2 in Ungasan, Nusa Dua (December 20)
SMA 1 in Kuta (January 15)
SMA Suverta in Kuta (January 17)
SMA 3 in Dalung (January 25)
The first showing in Ungasan
was a lesson for all of us. The screening took place
in a lab which was too small and could not be blackened.
We didn’t have a projector yet so had to rent
one. We hadn’t thought about a sound system, assuming
the projector’s would be sufficient, which for
home use is but not in a large group. The school let
us use theirs but it broke down in the beginning of
the screening. The brochures were not ready yet (this
was during Lebaran and many of the printers were off
for two weeks).
For the subsequent screenings, a questionaire was made
to assess if people were suffering from PTSD. This questionaire
was distributed at the screenings and collected on the
spot. Dr. Made Nyandra debriefed the wayang show and
fielded questions. It appeared that more than 50 percent
of the girls were suffering from PTSD or some form of
depression.
Each screening was made to approximately 300 students.
Banjars: Due to insufficient funding, we have not begun
going into the banjars in Kuta yet. We had grossly underestimated
certain costings. However, we did one performance in
Kuta on December 12, 2002 for the Peace and Unity Concert
there to a crowd of 6,000. It was quite a coup for Sidia,
as the Kuta-ites are not that interested in traditional
performances, especially Wayang and they stayed through
the rain and gave him an incredible response.
Nadya Lurie, an expatriate clothing designer who lives
in Bali sponsored two subsequent live performances.
The first one was in Banjar Kutuh, Ubud on December
22 (approximately 200 people attended) and the second
was in Banjar Dalem Kusumasari in the village of Kepaon
on January 22, 2003. Five of the bomb victims who were
killed were from Kepaon. There were only about 100 people
at Kepaon due to a heavy rainstorm that night but the
heads of the village begged us to come back in February
to another banjar down the road (We did go back in May
with the children’s version). From the questionaires
we received back in Kepaon, it appears that nearly 100%
of the people there are suffering from PTSD or some
form of depression.
The children's version was done live in three venues:
Banjar Lemukih, Buleleng
Br. Dukuh, Kepaon village, Badung
STSI campus, Denpasar
The DVD version was shown in 30 SDs (fifth and sixth
grades), SMPs and SMAs throughout the island. The venues
were chosen based on the home locality of the bomb victims.
