Sister School Program

Michele and Martin Dekok from the Boston Bar School M.A.D. World Club in Canada raised CAD$3.000 to help renovate the primary school SD 6 in Mas. The funds were used to build a new wall, paint the school walls and doors, replace the door handles and replace tiles in the schoolyard. The Dekoks, along with some of the parents from the school, painted and fixed up the school together in mid-July 2006. This is our first sister school program and we would like to thank Michele and Roy and all the students and parents from Boston Bar School who contributed to this effort.

Would you like to have a sister school in Bali?

There are various options which you can choose from to participate in our sister school program:

1. Simple sponsorship: the cost to send a child to school is approximately AUS $200/US $165  (Primary school) or AUS $368/US $250 (Junior High School). For additional information on the student,
such as report cards, photographs and letters/drawings from the child, there is an additional AUS $65/US $50  charge to cover additional costs for electronic transferal and transportation (some of these schools are a good hour drive from the YKIP office).

If your school sponsored ten students with the extras, for example, then your sponsorship would be AUS $2650/US $3,000 for one year.

Your school would send letters (and we would give you the names of your Indonesian schoolmates), drawings, photographs of your school and community (you would send these via post and we would then take these up to the school)--perhaps cassettes of your school choir singing. Use your imagination!

We would ask the Indonesian students to do the same (we will take the photographs) and send it back to you.

2. Library: most local schools have no libraries. To stock a primary school library with 120 volumes would cost approximately AUS$635/US$500. We would purchase the books at the local bookshop in Denpasar--mainly books in Bahasa Indonesia plus beginning books in English and posters for the classroom walls (which are usually bare). We would put in simple bookshelves and do a simple one-day training session with the teachers bout how to use a library (this would be in conjunction with a private school on the island whoich is doing outreach programs for local schools and one of their programs involves library training).

COST PER SCHOOL: AUS $ 635/US $500

3. Spruce up a school: the school buildings in Bali are in great need of repair. We would organize a gotong royong (mutual cooperation) session with students, teachers and parents to paint classrooms and do simple repairs. Some of the schools need desks, tables, chairs and storage cabinets; others need new roofs. So the costs are relative. If you are coming to Bali, then we could arrange it so this would happen while you were here. We would take you up to the school.

Cost per classroom (painting): AUS $380/US $285 Cost per school renovation (new roof): AUS $3,000/US $2,250  Any amount can be donated, however.  Your transport to school: AUS $55/US $42

4. School visit: if you or your classmates/teachers came to Bali, we would arrange it for you to visit your sister school as well as visit the homes of some of the students. This could be arranged as a field outing with a report so that two students (for example) go visit one student's home and then write it up for a school report.

Cost: transport to the school (AUS$55/US $42 for one air-con van that seats 8)

5. School outing: if you come to Bali, then an outing with your schoolmates could be arranged. This could be going to the beach together, visiting the Bali Bird Park (which has special rates for school kids), the Elephant Park or going on a picnic to the botanical gardens. The cost of this would be transportation for all of you, entrance fees to the venue and a picnic lunch (your school would pick up the costs for everyone). The cost would vary depending on how many people and which venue but it would be approximately Rp 200,000 (Aus $30/US $22 ) per person based on eight people to a van.
