Painting Competition

On September 7th, 2007 YKIP held a painting competition for the Gianyar KEMBALI sponsored children.  We thought only about 50 kids would sign up but we had 129 step up to the pastels!  It was quite the group effort.  The field staff at GNOTA (our government partner) let all the children know about the competition and procured the Sidan Stage as the venue for free (set against terraced ricefields it was perfect for inspiration!); YKIP organized snacks, lunch, the purchasing of art supplies and games to get the kids up and moving about; Matt Thorpe of RESET and Gilbert Quek and Pamela Goh of Dream Digital in Singapore happened to be in town and took fabulous photographs, including photos of the 19 winning paintings that were then uploaded to a website and then downloaded by Bali Contemporary Arts, who made the paintings in a 2008 calendar (www.balicontemporaryarts.com) to sell to make money for more kids to go to school in YKIP’s KEMBALI program.

That Sunday morning, the kids spilled out of the vans and took their places at the bleachers where pastels and paper had been put out for them.   We asked them to paint something from daily life and gave them a couple of hours to complete their project.  While the judges, Cokorda Astiti and Sri Supriyatini (two artists in their own right) and CEO YKIP Rucina Ballinger, made their choices, the YKIP staff and two volunteers (Elizabeth Pattiwael and Tri Putra Ebert Mario Manopo) taught the kids games, such as “the Knot Game” (holding hands, how does one get out of a knot into a circle), telephone tag and others.  Then we had lunch, sang songs and gave prizes of pastels and paper to the winners.  Everyone got colored pencils to take home to work on their artistic skills.

Lesley MacKenzie and Susan Petrik of Bali Contemporary Art in Australia then printed up a calendar and bookmarks from the children’s art. You can order the calendar directly from Lesley (Lesley@balicontemporaryart.com)
