Bantuan bagi korban Bom Bali 2005

On October l, 2005 three bombs exploded in Kuta and Jimbaran, Bali, killing 23 people and injuring over a hundred. The devastation was not as extensive as the bombs of 2002, but the emotional and economic impact is much worse than after the 2002 bombings.

YKIP is committed to assisting the bomb victims by giving them the medical care they need (outside of what the Indonesian and Australian governments have provided, which is substantial and perhaps sufficient); providing educational scholarships for the children of those e bomb victims who would have difficulty paying for their children's education; and helping with mental health programs.

With the very generous support of Mark Weingard and the Annika Linden Foundation (www.alfoundation.org), YKIP was able to begin supporting projects soon after the tragedy occurred.

The major projects we supported at that time were:
  1. Trauma Counseling (working with Kanaivasu Foundation-click here for details)
  2. Wayang Kulit Trauma Counseling Project (working with the Indonesian Red Cross Bali Branch and Kanaivasu-click here)
  3. Reimbursement for victim support costs incurred by IDEP Foundation -click here
  4. Victim Needs Assessment (working in conjunction with the Indonesian Red Cross and the POSKO Crisis Centre)-click here
OTHER SUPPORT AND NEW PROGRAMS
On October 8, 2005, a Paddle Out ceremony was held in Jimbaran Bay. This is a traditional ritual where surfers paddle out into the ocean, make a circle on their surfboards, hold hands and remember their surf buddy who had died in the ocean. This was the surf community's way of honoring those who had perished or were injured in the bombs of October 1st.

A charity event was also held on the same day with a dinner party aboard the Indies Trader IV vessel. Over Rp 200,000,000 (US $22,000) was raised on this evening to help the bomb victims with medical and other support.

The main organizers of this event, Quiksilver Indonesia, have appointed YKIP to administer these funds in an innovative re-training program. Short and long-term courses on everything from motorcycle repair to cake-making and reflexology will be offered to the victims who are still living on Bali, so they can learn a new skill that doesn't necessarily depend on the tourism industry. A group meeting was held on April 24, 2006 to assess what they want and need. Courses will begin in July.

Sponsors of the Charity Event include: Indies Trader IV, Garuda Indonesia, Alistair Spears, Four Seasons Resorts Bali, Ritz Carlton Bali Resort & Spa, Conrad Bali Resort & Spa, Synergi Travel, Westin Properties, Ibah Bali, Mick's Place Bingin, Taksu Gallery, Bruce Waterfield & the Reel 'm' In crew, Ernst & Young, Coca-Cola, Bintang, Storm Brewery, Jim Beam, Tuesday Night Pizza Club, Dalia & Co. YKIP would like to thank Quiksilver and the above sponsors for their support.

With these above funds, YKIP and the donors are helping the bomb victims by:
  1. Paying for their childrens' educational needs for the next year and a half (until June 2007)
  2. Offering skill upgrading courses to all
  3. Offering micro credit to all

YKIP is assisting 27 of the 2005 Bali bomb victims' with educational insurance policies worth approximately $500 each. These can be cashed in when their child goes onto the next level (for example, kindergarten to primary). One of these children's father, I Wayan Sudika was killed in the bomb; the rest were injured.

Funds for the insurance came from COURTS INDONESIA, YKIP and the QUIKSILVER donors. Irsa Lisa studying at Jamu Spa School

We are only helping those who are currently living on Bali as logistically it is difficult to locate those on Java.

On April 24, 2006, we invited all the victims to a meeting at Waroeng Ja Waroeng in Jimbaran to brainstorm about what kinds of courses they would like to take outside the tourism industry (we are trying to steer them into work that is more sustainable). Thirty-one of the 51 victims that we have on record have registered for these courses, which include driving, spa school, beauty school, tailoring and computer courses, which are all beginning in July 2006. The remainder of the victims are not participating due to the fact that they are in Australia (1), working on a cruise ship (1), own their own restaurant (1), live in Java (1), are small children (2), have no time (5) and haven't made up their mind (1). Eight of them we still haven't been able to locate as we don't have clear addresses (most of these are on Java).

The YKIP Field Officers, Hartanto, Sherly and Astrid with support from YKIP secretary Rai Trishna held a number of games to show the victims where their strengths and skills lie and a lot of discussion took place about their needs and wishes. Many of them were unclear as to what they wanted. The courses do not conflict with their day jobs at the restaurants where they were working the night of the bomb.

For those who are interested in starting up a small business, or expanding a current one, we are offering them micro credit loans of up to Rp 1,000,000 (US $120).

It is already clear that the bombs have once again devastated people's hopes for a stabilized economy. Coupled with the 126% increase in petrol on October 1, 2005, this will surely mean many more people will fall below the poverty line, translating to more children dropping out of school. This is where YKIP can use your help in supporting children in the KEMBALI program. It costs very little to school a child for six years.

Please take a moment to look at the KEMBALI webpage.

To all of you who have already donated to YKIP, we thank you.
