Victim Needs Assessment (working in conjunction with the Bali branch of the Indonesian Red Cross and the POSKO Crisis Centre at Sanglah Hospital)
|
In order to be able to help fund victims' needs, we needed to assess the victims' circumstances. A team consisting of YKIP fieldworker Ni Putu Sherlyana and volunteers from the Red Cross and the POSKO Crisis Centre have visited the victims who are resident on Bali. A detailed evaluation was made of their family (do they have school age children we need to give scholarships to?), their economic situation (are they back at work? Are they able to work?) and their outstanding medical expenses (all medical expenses at Sanglah Hospital are being covered by the Provincial Government). So far, we have found 43 victims (3 are deceased and most of the others have light injuries). Out of these 43, twelve have children (one of the deceased and eleven of the injured). YKIP/KIDS plan to educate the late Wayan Sudika's child through high school (and university if funds permit) and four of the primary aged children for another year and a half of schooling. The rest of the children (all pre-schoolers) shall receive educational bonds which can be cashed in when the child begins school. This is the same policy we used with the 2002 victims' children. The 2002 injured victims, once they were back at work and able to pay for their children's schooling, were released from the program.
Any surplus funds will be used in our KEMBALI scholarship program.
