Putu Swadesi was a baby sitter of Heru Djatmiko and Juliet Tumewu’s children when the bomb went off on October 1, 2005 in Café Menega Jimbaran. Shrapnel was imbedded in her neck and arms, leaving her virtually paralyzed. After a number of operations at the Royal Perth Hospital in Perth over a nine-month period and physical therapy (including acupuncture given by I Nyoman Sadra and sports therapy massage (physiotherapist) by I Ketut Putrawan), Desi has made incredible progress. In October of 2006, she returned to the Hospital for further operations on her ear. She is now able to swim, walk for relatively long distances and now has 75% control over her arm muscles. Quiksilver and Friends paid for her Balinese therapy sessions.
She currently works as a receptionist at Ketut Putrawan's physical therapy office and enjoys life in the city.
