Sister School Projects

There are a number of ways that you can work with a Sister School in Bali:

  1. Help with physical renovations (as of 2009 we are not doing any renovations as the provincial Balinese government has pledged to renovate all schools that need it. As this will take time, there are minor repairs we could do for example, in putting in a library or a first aid station).
  2. Put in a school library. most local schools have no libraries. To stock a primary school library with 120 volumes would cost approximately US $1,000 (includes books for six primary school grades plus bookshelves, tables and chairs). We purchase the books at the local bookshop in Denpasar--mainly books in Bahasa Indonesia plus beginning books in English and posters for the classroom walls (which are usually bare). We put in simple bookshelves and do a simple one-day training session with the teachers about how to use a library. CLICK HERE TO SEE OUR LIBRARY PROGRAM
  3. Sponsor an athletics program: US $ 200 - $2,000. This can range from purchasing sports equipment (basketball, volleyball, badminton, soccer) to assisting with a full-on sports program with intramural competitions.
  4. Sponsor an arts program: US $ 600 for a year’s worth of dance classes, including purchase of a tape recorder and dance music. US $ 600 for a year’s worth of art supplies (most schools will have an art teacher or at least someone who has those skills) for 100 students.
  5. Put in a First Aid Centre (UKS): Depends on what the school already has, but this would run from US $800 - $1,500 as we would put in the actual room/building.
  6. Simple sponsorship: the cost to send a child to school is approximately (the exchange rate fluctuates so these are the current rates for late 2009) AUS $187//US $173 (Primary school), AUS $425/US $394 (first year of Junior High School), UAD$ 343/US $318 (2nd and 3rd years of Junior High), AUD$686/US $635 (First year of Senior High School), and AUD$476/US$440 (2nd and 3rd year of Senior High School). For additional information on the student, such as report cards, photographs and letters/drawings from the child, there is an additional AUS $60/US $50 charge to cover additional costs for electronic transferral and transportation (some of these schools are a good hour drive from the YKIP office). (As the exchange rate tends to fluctuate, please check with us first)

If your school sponsored ten primary students with the extras, for example, then your sponsorship would be AUS $24702/US $2,230 for one year (as of late 2009). Your school would send letters (and we would give you the names of your Indonesian schoolmates), drawings, photographs of your school and community (you would send these via post and we would then take these up to the school)--perhaps cassettes of your school choir singing. Use your imagination!

We would ask the Indonesian students to do the same (we will take the photographs) and send it back to you.

  7. School visit: if you or your classmates/teachers came to Bali, we would arrange it for you to visit your sister school as well as visit the homes of some of the students. This could be arranged as a field outing with a report so that two students (for example) go visit one student's home and then write it up for a school report.

Cost: transport to the school (AUS$46/US $43 for one air-con van that seats 8)

  8. School outing: if you come to Bali, then an outing with your schoolmates could be arranged. This could be going to the beach together, visiting the Bali Bird Park (which has special rates for school kids), the Elephant Park or going on a picnic to the botanical gardens. The cost of this would be transportation for all of you, entrance fees to the venue and a picnic lunch (your school would pick up the costs for everyone). The cost would vary depending on how many people and which venue.

Michele and Martin Dekok from the Boston Bar School M.A.D. World Club in Canada raised CAD$3.000 to help renovate the primary school SD 6 in Mas. The funds were used to build a new wall, paint the school walls and doors, replace the door handles and replace tiles in the schoolyard. The Dekoks, along with some of the parents from the school, painted and fixed up the school together in mid-July 2006. This is our first sister school program and we would like to thank Michele and Roy and all the students and parents from Boston Bar School who contributed to this effort.

A similar program is being done by the Tanglin School in Singapore. Click here for details.
