KEMBALI North

North Bali is one of the drier and poorer areas on the island, as it lies above the rain catchment area south of the mountains. The village of Pemuteran, with a population of approximately 3,000, houses five primary schools and in 2005 opened up a Junior and Senior High School.

From 2007 until 2010, twenty-nine Junior High school students are being assisted with their educational costs, including school supplies, shoes, schoolbag and a bicycle so they could easily get to and from school. This assistance will end when the students graduate from Junior High in June 2010.

In the academic year 2006-2007, ALF and YKIP funded 50 sixth-graders in four of the five primary schools. This assistance consisted of exercise books, pencils, pens, and other school supplies. As textbooks were purchased for all of the children in primary school in 2005-2006, there was no need to purchase any new books, as they could be handed down to the next class coming in.

For the academic year 2005-2006, there were 831 students in primary school and YKIP-ALF assisted them with the following for the year:

  • Built and installed 200 benches and chairs for students
  • Built and installed five book cupboards
  • Purchased and distributed 12 writing books per child for the first semester
  • Purchased and distributed 1.150 schoolbooks for all the children for the first semester

We intentionally purchased books for all of the children as to fund individual scholarships for the 300 destitute children would cost much more than helping all of them a little bit.

Ni Ketut Wiyasni of Reef Seen did the original compilation of data of all the school aged children in Pemuteran and I Gusti Ngurah Wisnu Wardana of Puri Ganesha took over as the Project Coordinator, donating his time to ensure that these children get a decent education. Gusti is also keeping a close eye on what is needed for future projects. I Nyoman Yuda came on board in 2007 and together wih Wardana have started their own foundation called YAP (Yayasan Anak Pemuteran). They have a number of after school programs where they are teaching the students English, computer skills as well as other subjects.

Ganesha Books of Bandung has kindly discounted the schoolbooks so that all the children were able to receive them and Makro of Denpasar gave YKIP a discount on the writing books. Sinar Dunia has supplied YKIP with discounted writing books since 2006. We would like to thank them for their participation.
