| The 12th October 2002 was a black
day in Bali. 202 innocent people, mainly young international
tourists and Indonesians were killed and over 300 seriously
injured by a wicked bomb attack outside popular nightclubs
on Jalan Legian Kuta. The Balinese people and their
many international friends are determined to never forget
all those who so tragically lost their lives, the grieving
families they left behind and the hundreds of people
who were injured and may indeed always remain injured.
As if to balance this outrage, Bali saw an unprecedented
outpouring of love and help from around the world. Hospital
workers, tourists, unending Balinese and international
volunteers, government officials, embassy and consular
staff worked tirelessly and together, often in inadequate
and sometimes horrific conditions to relief human suffering.
Looking to the future everyone who cares about Bali
and its people is absolutely determined that something
good must be made to come out of this terrible tragedy.
The founders and members of YKIP (Yayasan Kemanusiaan
Ibu Pertiwi or in English the Mother Earth Humanitarian
Foundation) are among them and so have committed themselves
to achieving this vital goal. The Foundation is based
in Bali and therefore focused on Bali, but its work
is permanently dedicated to the memory of all those
people from every country who perished and the hundreds
of people who were injured. |
