The Medical Reference & Education Center at Udayana University, Medical Faculty, Denpasar-Bali
Introduction
MREC (Medical Resource Education Centre) was created at the instigation of Dr. Carlo Forzinetti, an Italian heart surgeon and resident of Bali who functions as the Head of YKIP's Medical Training committee. This project's purpose is to provide and to equip a medical reference and education center housed at Udayana University Medical Faculty. In 2006, Dr. Denise Abe, an American physician living in Bali, joined the team.
MREC was established with joint funding by YKIP and the Annika Linden Foundation (Mark Weingard) and was officially inaugurated by Mark Weingard, the head of the YKIP Management Board David Magson and treasurer Totok Sudarmanta and the Dean of the Medical Faculty Prof. Dr. Ketut Sueta on the 13th of October 2003.
YKIP is working closely with a number of doctors from the university medical faculty and hospitals in Bali to implement a program to improve training for Balinese doctors, medical students and paramedics, both here and overseas. MREC provides students and medical personnel with better access to information in Medical Science since the MREC is equipped with comprehensive facilities such as online Medical references, the latest edition of books, and ten computers with internet access. Special English programs and a fully equipped language lab are on the same premises as the library to assist students and medical staff in upgrading their English skills.
The Center networks with the 32 Institutes of the Medical faculty to offer 'on line' consultation facilities for the research needs of the Medical faculty. MREC is jointly administered by YKIP and the Medical faculty as a independent Institution, where the faculty is providing qualified librarians and clerical personnel to handle the day to day library activities. MREC was officially inaugurated by one of YKIP's major donor, Mark Weingard, of the Annika Linden Foundation and the Dean of the Medical Faculty Prof. Dr. Ketut Sueta on the 13th of October 2003.
YKIP put in place five student librarians to assist in procuring information for students and faculty in 2004. However, they were released in 2005 as they were not able to comply with the time commitments of the job.
YKIP’s mission to improve the medical facilities on the island of Bali has found a perfect niche at the Medical Faculty of Udayana University, a state institution. The Medical Reference & Education Centre (MREC) is designed to provide students with better access to information in Medical Science.

In 2007, the endowed ANNIKA LINDEN FOUNDATION CHAIR IN ENRICHMENT OF HEALTH SCIENCE STUDIES IN ENGLISH was established. In January 2007, Mellissa Withers from the University of California at Los Angeles, conducted an intensive course in English on Literature Review for select medical students. Her position was then filled in April 2007 by I Made Setiawan, who holds a PhD in Public Health from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He has set up a curriculum in Medical Anthropology and is working with both the MREC and the Public Health department students.
